31 March - Continuing Cat/Daff Coverage; Advances in 3D Cat Photography

Cat Milkshake in the Daffs

I believe that this is
Cat Milkshake's first appearance in Cat/Daff coverage - always pleased to see a new player.

Nutmeg and Daffs

Of course, Nutmeg is a seasoned Cat/Daff vet.

Also...

Leroy on the porch in 3D

... Though not, strictly speaking, daff-related, this superb 3D study of Leroy on the porch is well worth the posting. Leroy, a very contemplative cat, was very good at holding still for the two exposures necessary for the 3D effect. Sadly, Natasha and Nutmeg are probably too mercurial for satisfactory cat/3D work.

28 March - The Continuing 3D Wave

Dog in 3D

Enthusiastic feedback from our recent
anaglyphic 3D post has been so absolutely nonexistent that I thought I'd try again. Above a dog poses with a paw hovering dramatically in mid-air. Below...

cat2_3d (45K)

... A cat sulks. But sulks dramatically in vivid 3D. Glasses are available through Amazon - you want the red/cyan type - and through many other web sites - just do that Google thing. You don't want to be left out of the next big thing, you know.

27 March - The Miracle of the Trusting Cats

Ex Voto of the Stray Cats

Currently on eBay, a very fine ex voto - a object (in this case a retablo, a painting) that commemorates a miraculous intervention. Here, a kind lady gives thanks for three poor little stray cats - here's the caption, translated by the seller:
In the small wood near our home there were three cats living in bad conditions, they were skinny and unsociable, but little by little and with a lot of patience I won their trust, now they live in my garden and we exchange love and friendship, they are now they are healthy, beautiful and even a little bit fat. I thanks to San Francisco to allow me to conquer the trust of the cats because I love them a lot and they also love me.
Very nice, and superbly painted, too.
The auction ends Monday, and bidding's pretty brisk.

27 March - Recent Acquisitions

Benish Restaurants Corn Prongs, c.1925

Thanks to the generous contribution of a good Friend of the Museum, we recently acquired these superb corn prongs, circa 1925, from
the Benish Restaurants of St. Louis. The Janus Museum has the largest collection of Benish Restaurants artifacts and documents of any major museum. I'm not bragging; it's just a fact.

24 March - Archie

Archie meets Cat Toby as David Neumann stands by.

I'm sad to report that an old Friend of the Museum, Archie the Dachshund, has died at the age of thirteen. Above, with his buddy David Neumann, he meets good old
Cat Toby. We'll miss Archie's cheerful bark when we go down Fifth Avenue.

21 March - Let the Daff Games Begin

Leroy and Daffs in the Forest Preserve

Pleased to announce that
Cat/Daff Season is now open, even if the daffs aren't quite in bloom, at least in the Museum's Forest Preserve. But Cat Leroy was anxious to get on with the festivities, and who am I to say no?

20 March - Lassitudinosity and 3D

Maxine on the Fellows' Common Room Couch

Nice and warm, here - beautifully sunny - doors and windows thrown open - ceiling fan in operation for the first time since September - daffs opening. Should go rake out the cat wallows for the big
Wallowing Season Opener (or at least attempt to get Gus to do it), but suddenly feel tremendous lassitude stealing over me - can barely keep eyes open on the Fellows' Common Room couch - fresh air making me woozy - can barely lift new issue of Wired...

But may be able to summon energy to post the first in a series of anaglyphs - red/blue stereoviews made from stereo Kodachromes I shot around 1980, using these handy instructions. If you have the energy, put on your red/blue specs now:

Devon Cow and Calf, Turkey Run Farm, Virginia

It's a Devon cow and calf photographed at Turkey Run Farm, next to the CIA in Virginia. Red/blue glasses can be easily found online. Note - the glasses you swiped at the showing of Avatar won't work. Oh, just one more stereoview:

Rodger Kingston on the Mall, 1981

It's our old buddy Rodger Kingston, giving himself bunny ears on the Mall. Of course, we've worked in 3D on these pages before. Will post more later, if I can find the energy. And now, back to the couch.

13 March - More Feline Zeal

Cats Nutmeg, Leroy, Natasha

What with the torrential rains, the snowpack from the February blizzards is pretty much gone, but images from last week's probe into the Museum's Forest Preserve show the last icy remnants. Above, from the left, Nutmeg, Leroy, and Natasha. Leroy and Natasha are on the former
Excellent Climbing Tree. By the way, Thursday marked the one year anniversary of poor Nutmeg's brush with disaster. She marked the anniversary by eating like a horse, sleeping, and chasing Natasha.

Leroy in the Woods

Leroy attempts to disappear into the shadow of a tree - very shy, is Leroy.

7 March - Feline Zeal and Activity

Cat Natasha with Snowdrops

Yesterday was fine and warm, and with the snow rapidly disappearing, it was as if someone blew a clarion trumpet that only the local cats could hear - everyone was out for the first real scamper session of the season. Above, Natasha lifts an elegant paw in the presence of the first
snowdrops.

Cats in the Circle

Leroy and Natasha go for a brisk lap around the Circle as Nutmeg takes a bit of a break and a wash.

Nutmeg and Buddha up a tree

Later, Buddha Minor and Nutmeg hone their tree climbing skills, still a bit rusty after the long winter, while...

Cat Peake in the woods

... Good old Peake moodily contemplates the Museum's forest preserve, much damaged by the snows.

5 March - Crocus Report

Leroy and the first crocus

Looking a bit poleaxed after emerging from the drifts, the first crocuses of the season have shown up, somewhat later than the last couple of years. Soon it'll be time for
the big annual Wallowing Season Opener, and then comes Cat/Daff Season, and then maybe Blue Jay Ground Attack Season - Spring in all its varied moods...
